Local "Hero" Project

You will be given a handout describing the details of this project. Essentially you will do a brief research project on someone "famous" in Vancouver. This person will have parks, roads, schools, theatres or what have you named after her or him.

What I expect you to include is information on the person such as when lived, where they lived (and travelled  and what they did to have streets, parks, schools, etc. named after them. Some of you need to find more facts....The follow up to this is to find out streets, parks, neighborhoods, that are named after people of Aboriginal or Canadian ancestry.

This will lead into a discussion of just who's history is most prevalent in our city and it's named venues and why it is important to be aware of biases and perhaps prejudices inherent in such a system.

Celebrity Biography Assignment
(remember: NOT CUT AND PASTE!!!)

OK, the pressure for you to choose is on...
Once you have chosen your "target", it is time to go about collecting information. Please do not begin by collecting millions of photos, we do not have enough class time for use it all on picture searches. Time management is one of the goals of this project...

What information to include about a "celebrity"?
Start with the basics: Birth date, birthplace, parents, childhood experience, schooling, important childhood highlights that relate to their career.
When and where did there career start. How did it start... did they have producer, promoters, managers, etc., etc.
Then career highlights, stats, awards, trivia (albums, movies, games played, titles, oscars, emmies, video awards, etc.)
Relationships, loves and losses
If they are "NOTORIOUS" why and how.. legal troubles, beef, frienemies?
If they are dead, when, why? Is there an interesting story.....

The second part of the assignment is to move from facts and factoids to ideas and opinions. Who, what, where, when, why, and how are the keys to your op./ed. portion. Use the facts to strengthen your opinions.... for example if someone is the "best quarterback ever!".. tell us why. If you don't have some facts to base your statements on, then it will border on hyperbole and dribble (I tried to sound smart there).
Through the whole project try to personalize the information to what it is you like about the person... include yourself in your writing....
